COOTS COMPILATION

COOTS JOURNEY AS A RHINO

THE ORIENTATION

The journey with the Rhino family commenced on 19 Mar 1977 when I got commissioned to the Assam Regiment from the erstwhile OTA, Madras. In spite of being brought up in an Army background I never had any clue of the Regiment and my first exposure to a Rhino was my drill instructor – Hav Ringliana  Lushia  (3 Assam) . I was awe struck with the Gurkha and Kumaon Regiments but when it came to filling up the choice I chose Assam (I was rebuked by my Gnr Bn Cdr and my idol pl cdrs who were from the Gurkha and  Kumaon Regiments) . Being in the top bracket I got my choice and  then started an association of 20 nay 22 years with one of the finest Regiments  of the Indian Army (No Exaggeration) . Post a short break I landed up for the pre YO training at the Centre.  Phew ! What a place ?  I felt I was transported to a different world. Happy Valley had all the ingredients of a foreign locale seen through Bollywood movies – the gals , the pubs, the music and the aromatic cuisine. Amrik Singh Malhi was the Comdt then and the  YOs included Bawa, Saxena , Sant Ram , B S Gurung , Nirmal Rout , Gurmit , Gurcharan , PRM Ravi and Rawat . The staff at the centre was headed by Saharia ( Dy Comdt ) , Shekhawat , Ramchander, Deonath Singh , and the trio of BS Sandhu , Madan and Donuhue and of course our fav Adjt , Biren Borgahain . So many anecdotes and it would require another volume to rewrite – Clinching the 101 Area Football Trophy from GTC , Jasbir Bawa lifting the cup and the partying till wee hrs is still vivid in my memory. It was here that I learnt the annals of the Regimental History and was bloodied with traditions and customs and then of course Badluram entered my veins.

PALTAN TIME – THE PHANTOMS.

After the YOs at Belgaum, Cdo Kutty was train bound for Ranchi to join the paltan. The initiation was typical of the Regiment. Officers impersonating as orderlies. Hav Majors, Mess Hav et al – Ragda and Ragging the fauji style. The one month with the men in the lines made you a soldier blue and the grand entry finally to the officers mess had all the ingredients of grooming a youngster (Wonder if these traditions still prevail in the units) . Well now for the ensemble of the officers of the Khel then – Khullar in Comd, Gurdip, Ghai, Martin Khongmen, SD Roy, Pradhan ,Kalia, S Ramalingam , Gray , Gandhi , Negi ,  MC Pradhan, Hye , PS Dhilon , Arjun Rai , NR singh and Vinay Kumar our QM . Over a period some left some joined – JR Mukherjee, BS Judge, Harry Tamber, SK Behura , Subrata  Saha and SN Mohanty . Waking up at 5 AM on a Sunday morning with Gurdip’s – Sunday morning up with a lark on his record player was the right antidote to the beat the previous night hangover (He had a collection of more the 500 LPs and EPs). I could write n numbers of kissas but all that on a later date. Our tenure saw us with three stints of IS duties – Jamshedpur, Bokaro and Ranchi.  Over to Malari for a HAA tenure. Many comrades left for greener pastures and the next gen joined – Sandhu, Tripathi, Arun , Mani Ram , Gautam Rai ,  Anil Suryavanshi ( JAG br ) ,   Sandip Dabral and Sharat Johri (Our RMO). The Officer’s Mess was always in a mess at the battalion headquarters, what with an average fifty eggs being boiled, scrambled, sunny sided and omeletted every morning. New raisings and ERE’s took its toll and the FS at the Officer’s mess started depleting. JS Rajkumar took over the reins. There are ‘n’ number of anecdotes of those moments in the HAA which the Phantoms will recollect. Maybe I will pen those for their PJ celebs. From Malari to Binnaguri was a smooth transition, albeit the LRC fiasco still reverberates. Command changed and Ashok Hukku took over. Many tigers who could not make it to the HAA rejoined. S Ramalingam, SD Roy, Somdutt, Pradhan, Hye and Harry Tamber, to name a few. Youngsters like Rakesh Sharma, Sanjay Gupta and Arvind Khati joined the bandwagon. The regiment found a highly spirited Rhino in WBS Ramalingam (our new RMO) who till date is more regimental than many of us.

OFF ON STAFF / ERE

Time to say adieu to khel as I moved on staff and as luck would have been the Rhino Kavach was still around with a Rhino Deputy Commander YP Singh and the Rhino Hill (named after 2nd Assam) overlooking my hut in the Brigade headquarters.

BACK TO REGIMENTATION

Well, it was regimental time again and it was ARC, Shillong. With Shivpuri in command and Sailo as his deputy, it was a great melee. Gahatraj was the adjutant who handed the reins to me on his promotion. It was a tough time selecting the correct stick orderly for the commandant. The team then was Mukherjee, CB Thapa, Rattanjit Singh, Ronny Rajkumar, KJR Kumar, Amarjeet Singh, Jason Peter, IP Singh, NR Lama, Unni (QM), Sant Singh (SRO) and Saini (RMO). Getting back to Happy Valley was indeed nostalgic. The memories give me the adrenal rush even today.

DARING DOZEN BECKONS

Finally, I was on my way to join the Daring Dozen. Having missed the bus when I was earmarked in the nucleus team in 1985. here I was six years later to join a team of mix class composition unit – the Dogras, Garhwalis, South Indians and the NE Troops. The only common link between them was the cereal they cherished – RICE.  So a trip to Langar would give you the same food spread. Poonch was our battalion headquarters, with Judge in command, Sunit Kumar was the lamb. The team had Ashish, Rana, Tabib, Jayachandran, Roy, Puntar, Sen Gupta, Biswas, Sherawat, Anoop, Jha (EME), Sahota, Malhotra, Dagar and Kashyap. The Betar river, Moti Mahal and the lush meadows of the Poonch Valley had all the ingredients for a Bollywood box masala. But the irritation along the LC had its constraint. The LIC at Kirni took its toll of three brave hearts and how I missed out on the wound medal is a mystery till date. The next padav was Nasirabad. Sunit Kumar took over and Reddy, SN Rai and Ravi Dutt joined. Puntar hung his boots and we lost Tanmay Kashyap in a tragic motor cycle accident.

THE LAST BASTION – HQ 33 CORPS.

Finally the curtains down for my last innings with the Olive Greens. Here also I had the Rhinos for company. The ERE at the Corps HQ was from our Regiment and Thapliyal was there as the Camp Comdt (His son is in 5 Assam now). 24 Oct 1997 was the last day in my uniform and as I set out for a white collar job with the Corporate world, little did I realise that the association with the Rhinos will further continue, for my first boss in the civvies was J S Antal. So for 22 years Badluram followed me through the units, the centre, staff, ERE and the Corporate world – must be a record of sorts for a NON STOP association with the Rhinos

THE RHINOS WHO MATTERED IN MY LIFE

  • MARTY KHONGMEN My first coy cdr, nick named as Cowboy, who taught me the nuances of battle drills and battle procedures.
  • GURDIP SINGH – Banta Singh to all, smiling in the toughest situation was his hall mark. A hard-core RHINO (Father, Father in Law, Brother in Law and Son all RHINOS) was like a coconut .
  • JR Mukherjee – Fondly called Jhonny, was an epitome of professionalism with a heart of Gold who was always available for any RHINO in distress.
  • Subrata Saha – Subi to many, my room mate, my bump chum, we shared everything under the sun. One of the finest COR we have ever had.
  • K Biswas – Vicky to me. Loyalty and integrity are his traits. My company officer who would always call a spade a spade.
  • Tanmay Kashyap – A four star general material and was my most lovable youngster but destiny had something else stored for him. He left for heavenly abode a little too early.
  • JS Antal – Jerry, as he was known in the regiment, he was my guru in the corporate world who gave me enough ammo to survive in the big bad corporate world.
  • Shivpuri – Prakash to his peers, I feel short of words for him. An officer and a gentleman to the core. They don’t make officers like him anymore. His another great asset is Mrs. Veena Shivpuri, the most adorable loving and caring lady I have met in my entire army career.

SAYONARA ! ALVIDA ! GOODBYE !

As a Rhino Veteran today, when I write down the reminisces of my journey with the regiment, my only earnest request to the Gen-Next is – “KNOW YOUR REGIMENT” “KNOW YOUR MEN”, dig the history and learn about the great officers and men who built up our regiment. The Rhino and Badluram are inseparable and we have carved a niche in the armed forces for ourselves in a very short span. It is our rich history, valour and leadership that has withstood the sands of time.

KAR CHALE HUM FIZA JANEMAN SAATHIYO – AB TUMHARE HAVALE YEH REGIMENT SAATHIYO.

TAGRA RAHO. ONCE A RHINO – ALWAYS A RHINO

POST SCRIPT.  The views are my personal and have not been dictated by anyone. My apologies for addressing the seniors by their names as their ranks kept changing at various stages in their careers and the bonding is more cemented by the first name than by their ranks. I may have missed out some names due to old age and time factor. Regrets for the same.

MEMORABLE MEMORIES PLATINUM JUBILEE ( November 15th – 18th 2016 )

November 15th 2016

As the Indigo flight landed at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport , Guwahati on the morning of 15th Nov 2016, I was anticipating a typical army reunion with my comrades with some nostalgic moments of the bygone time spent three decades ago, but what unfolded over the next few days in Shillong at the Platinum Jubilee of my Regiment (The Assam Regiment) will be etched in my memory for time immemorial. I could write volumes here on those five days spent in the mystic abode of clouds (Meghalaya) but for now I will just let my laptop speak about the plethora of events that rolled.

The reception at the airport and the drive to Shillong was superbly coordinated and what lay ahead could be felt. On arrival at the Centre all Officers and their families were warmly welcomed by Lt Gen Subrata Saha, Deputy Chief of the Army Staff and Colonel of the Assam Regiment and Arunachal Scouts. The sheer pleasure of meeting the known faces eroded the vagaries of the road journey.

The evening commenced with the unveiling  of the Platinum Jubilee Trophy  by Lt Gen Praveen Bakshi, GOC – in – C, Eastern Army Command. This was followed by a short documentary film on the glorious 75 years of my Regiment. As the fusion of the Brass, Pipe and Jazz band of the Centre echoed the august gathering were mesmerized. The dinner thereafter gave time to marry up with colleagues young and old. The presence of the gracious ladies added charm to the environment.

November 16th 2016

The day was historic – The first event of the day was dedication of the War Memorial. This was followed by the colour presentation where our four battalions – 16 Assam , 17 Assam,  1 and 2 Arunachal Scouts  got the colours from the Gen Dalbir Singh Suhag , Chief of the Army Staff  who minced no words when he remarked that he had never seen such a parade in his two and half year tenure as the COAS. The parade was commanded by Brig SK Jha , Centre Commandant, Assam Regimental Centre. The Chief then interacted with the veterans and their families.

After the glittering parade we moved to Raj Bhavan (Governor’s House) where we were hosted by his Excellency Mr. Shanmuganathan who unveiled the Plaque commemorating the raising of Assam Regiment in 1941. He thereafter released the third volume of the Assam Regiment history. He lauded the Assam Regiment for its rich history and contributions of the units in various operations pre- and post Independence.

The evening dinner was hosted by the respective battalions for the serving and veterans and their families.

November 17th  2016

The day started with the Sainik Sammelan where the Hon. Minister of State for Home Affairs Mr. Kiren Rijaiju addressed the august gathering. Thereafter he unveiled the bust of Havaldar Hangpan Dada who has been awarded the Ashok Chakra posthumously for his daring action in the valley. The chief guest then inaugurated the newly renovated Bishnu Museum which showcases the history & saga of the Assam Regiment.  The motor cycle expedition which had covered the historic battle grounds where the Regiment had taken part in various wars was then flagged in at the Mohan Stadium. The spouse of Havaldar Dada was thereafter felicitated by the Chief Guest.  A befitting tribute to this brave heart was a rendering of the ever classic song – “Eh mere watan ke logon” by the first Indian Idol Junior Anjana Padamanbhan which brought tears in the eyes of many. The traditional barakhana which was served afterwards  culminated with all the officers, men and their families getting together and singing our regimental song – Badluram ka Badan.

November 18th 2016

The last day was spent paying respect to the almighty by attending Church & Mandir Service. Thereafter while the Officers were having forum discussions with the COR, the ladies were busy spending the new currency at the special bazaar set up. The lunch that day was hosted by the Gorkha Regiment Centre.  Braving the  evening  chill the packed house  witnessed the cultural show which showcased the traditions and culture of the seven states of North East at the SK Pillai Shed. Following this there was an informal dinner hosted at the Assam House where the gathering was enthralled by the foot tapping songs by Anjana Padmanabhan again.

Yeh Dil Mange More – Kyunki Zindagi Nahi Milegi Dobara. But then everything has to come to an end. The memories will linger until we meet again for the centenary celebrations. Till then “Khush Raho ! Tagra Raho !!

Then, it was in Punjab and bang on the NHAI  Pathankot-Dharamshala-Mandi-Kullu road.

6.         Primary Schooling in a vill Government School and Matric in
Government High School Nurpur by 1961.

7.         Further study in Government College Dharamshala, where
Indian Cine Famous Actor Dev Anand had studied, whose photograph adorns the
Central Hall of the college to date.

8. While in college, was actively
involved in NCC activities.
Attended a number of camps and also a ‘B’ certificate holder. Around 1962,
Chinese aggressed into India, patriotism was at peak, own brother –in-law, a World
War II veteran, was my the then idol who not only advised his own son but also me
to remain focussed and not waste time, the very motivation for me to join the
armed forces.

9.         I think it was the right choice at the right time and those
who gave heed to his advice then are all commissioned class 1 gazette officers
and proud veterans today, including his son.

10.       So much was the go within me that I got enrolled myself the
first chance I got and that was into  J&K RIFLES on 29 May 1963 much before
being adjudged as an ADULT by our judiciary ie at a very young age of 17 years
and 07 days, this was the minimum age required then.

Training.

11.       As an OR (29 May 1963 to 17 Jul 1966).

(a)       Did 44 weeks of training and was posted
to New Raising 8 JAK RIFLES. Had a first ever experience of Batallion move in
1964, by train from Gwalior to Pathankot followed by road move upto
Muthi-Damana (J&K).

exhilarating, first ever mobilization, of battalion for War with Pakistan from
Samba Sector in 1965.

(b)       Commissioned on 21 Dec 1969 into the 6 ASSAM REGIMENT and was posted/attached with Assam Regimental Centre for Pre Young Officers Course.

15.       From ARC, we all went for the YO-1 Course at MHOW. At MHOW, our Centre Religious Teacher (PADRI) had brought our rifles with whom we had practiced, however, I was not permitted to fire since the Breach block number was different to the one registered. I considered myself to be a Marksman, but had to borrow rifle from others and managed to just pass, however, this went against me.

20.       An objective was captured without any opposition by A coy led attack, however, while doing re-organisation, the section cdr stepped on a landmine resulting in two fatal casualty. One of whom was my  buddy Paokho Lal Kuki. A big shock.

21.       On 3rd Dec 1971, escaped a sudden shelling by pakis when one of it landed as close as 20mtrs to our veh while returning after some purchases. Self and LT MNA THAMPI were given a real dressing down by our 2IC then, sir MAJ K JAGMOHAN SINGH.

26.       119 Inf Bn (TA) as Adjt (01 Oct 78 to 04 Oct 81).

(a)       Lt Col RBJ Snaiz, VSM was the then CO, learnt so many things from him as an Adjt to include conducting Boxing without proper XXXXX as also conduct firing of 2″ Mor without a proper firing range. After him, Lt Col Surjit Singh from Garhwal Rifles took over.

RECEIVING TA BANNER                        WINNER COMD PIPE BAND

(b)       All these three years, 119 INF BN (TA) was adjudged the BEST BN in the Eastern Command TA Gp HQ. We also won the Comd Pipe Band Competition. This was a memorable and a very very professionally satisfying tenure.

(b)       Spent two severe winters there. Did fairly well Cdr, Brig Sher Jung Rathore while on Adm Insp, during night marched with my coy column moving for the Raid. He was highly impressed, even had fired during the day at the rifle firing range and awarded Self and then Lt BS Negi.

(c)       In addition learnt, how the offrs are exploited. Tragic shocks beyond my conception. Anyway, completed all tasks allotted to me incl the responsibility as Offg CO of the bn. Cdrs up the

chain right upto the Corps cdr were very happy with the bn. Incidentally to date I have a copy of the DO of appreciation by the then Corps Cdr,  LT GEN GS RAWAT, PVSM, AVSM.

DO OF APRRECIATION : CORPS CDR

(d)       Conducted bn mov by road to Srinagar then onwards to Jammu. From Jammu mov by train to Lucknow.

(e)        Permission was granted to get family into the station but, again got deprived of the Md govt accn. On top of it, was detailed for Combined Air Warfare Course at Secunderabad, the day I reached khel with family. Had no choice but to leave them at the offrs mess guest room. Rest leave it to imagination. Surprisingly, even after completion of two years at Lucknow, wasn’t allotted entitled md accn.

(f)        Combined Air Warfare course was not only a good course to learn on matters other than foot soldiering but we were also looked after as an offr and gentleman. Enjoyed the hospitality while also secured an ‘A’ grading.

(g)       While at Lucknow peace stn, we conducted Field Firing at REWA and Exercises in gen A Almora-Binsar-Bhagirathi, both twice. While on ex, Col AB Sharma took over the comd.

(h)       During the Leh and Lucknow stint was the D Coy Commander which won almost all the competitions. Some pictures to reminiscence those wonderful moments of glory are as illustrated below :-

WON ALMOST ALL INTER COY COMPETITIONS : 1984-85

28.       Op RAKSHAK & Op BLUESTAR (14 Jul 83 to 09 Jan 85).

(a)       While on ex at Binsar Heights at Bareily, the unit was inducted into Punjab for Op BLUESTAR.

(b)       My coy did very well during this period, and did manage to garner local support with utmost loyalty. They were willing to present cash money of Rs One Lakh then to assist the bn. CO suggested making mobile shelters and cooking houses which they willingly accepted and made it for the Paltan. To my mind, they still exist in coys and pretty handy till date.

29.       NCC Stint at Amravati, Maharashtra (21 Jan 85 to 21 May 86).

(a)       Got posted to NCC Gp HQ, Amravati as Trg Maj and had hardly shifted with family when my mother got paralysed and had to immediately shift my wife and kids to Pathankot.

(b)       Republic Day, the 26th Jan is very critical and important from NCC point of view and so I made plans to proceed on leave immediately after, when hell broke loose.

(c)       A big Life turn, on 18 Jan 1986, lost my wife and just after one month on 14 Feb 1986 lost my mother too and life came to a stand-still.

30.       HQ 29 Inf Div as DAA&QMG (23 May 86 to 11 Jul 88).

(a)       Got posted to newly raised 29 inf Div as its first DAA&QMG and the div was at Mamun, Pathankot. Most of the bns were under TRS and tented accn.

(b)       Got myself together and commenced the journey to re-collect and re-start and lead a reasonable life. Was lucky enough to have most understanding life partner in Jan 1988, who not only looked after my sons but also managed the dual relation ie the old and new that it had now become.

31.       14 ASSAM as its 2IC (12 Jul 88 to 14 Sep 89).

(a)       Post putting the life’s puzzle together again, I got posted to Abohar as 2IC 14 Assam on its raising, which was then located next to Div HQ along the canal. Family had to be left behind owing to kids education which was at a crucial stage.  This place too had its ups and downs, and the paltan saw through major floods in Fazilka, where its aid to civ auths was well appreciated and the work recognized in the form of awards. Also carried out fd firing in Mahajan Fd firing ranges and conducted various div level sports events.

(b)       Served with the following officers :-

(i)        COL AG DATTAR                – CO.

(ii)       MAJ CS NAIR.

(iii)      MAJ NC ROUT, SM.

(iv)      MAJ AS SOHAL.

(v)       MAJ PK BOSE.

(vi)      MAJ JS RAWAT.

(vii)     MAJ GEORGE JACOB.

(viii)    CAPT DALWARA SINGH   – RMO.

(ix)      CAPT RS PUNDIR.

(x)       CAPT N NIRANJAN.

(xi)      CAPT SD GOSWAMY.

(xii)     LT RG ADISARE.

(xiii)    LT S BAVEJA.

(xiv)    LT S MARTIN.

(xv)     LT K MALHOTRA.

32.       119 Inf BN (TA).

(a)       Was posted on second stint to 119 Inf Bn (TA) from 14 Assam, this time as QM. Probably, the Regimental services required by the Col of the Regiment.

(b)       Did fairly well, but this time most of the tenure the khel remained away from permanent location.  Went to Halwara Air force Station (next to Ludhiana), Punjab and were responsible to provide garrison security to the AF Stn.

(c)       On deinduction, within no time, the khel was re-inducted into Op Rhino all over in Assam including Guwahati.

119  INF BN (TA)

(d)       Served with following offrs :-

(i)        COL VINEET PANT & COL LC SAILO                             – CO.

(ii)       LT COL MP AO & LT COL MARTIN KHONGMEN         – 2IC.

(iii)      CAPT RM BHATNAGAR                                                     – ADJT.

33.       Inf School Belgaum (25 May 93 to 31 May 94).

(a)       In 1993 got posted to HQ JL Wing at Inf School Belgaum as QM. It was an experience by itself to look after Offrs, JCOs and NCOs coming on different courses to Belgaum.

(b)       During this very tenure my both sons got commissioned. Elder one, then 2nd LT AJAY KATOCH joined 24 PUNJAB and younger one, 2nd LT VIKAS KATOCH joined my parent unit 6 ASSAM REGT.

34.       OC GL Sec (01 Jun 94 to 31 May 97).        This tenure proved to be quite a tasking and we were mostly deployed away from our permt loc ie Sujanpur near Pathankot. Main achievement was conduct of elections in J&K and Fmn ex. From here I finally retired on 31 May 1997.

35.       Re – Employment. I applied for re-employment, which was relatively new however, gave the opportunity to serve akin to your civil counterparts based on age.

(a)       85 Armd Regt / 16 (I) Armd Bde (01 Sep 97 to 20 Jun 01).            Working with the Black Dangri was a wonderful and an eye opening experience. Learnt a lot while deployed for Op role in Op VIJAY. Was appointed as Staff Offr ‘A’ during the stint.

16 INDEP ARMD BDE

(b)       51
Inf Bde (28 Jun 01 to 21 May 03)
.          The
last in uniform was with HQ 51 Inf Bde as Staff Capt. While moods were full on
to focus towards moving finally into my humble abode in Himachal Pradesh,
however, this too went in ‘Op PARAKRAM’.

(c)       A rare feat, that one retires from the
same formation twice and this happened with me. First being retirement from HQ
51 Inf Bde on 31 May 1997 and then again psot re-employment on 21 May 2003. Am
grateful and happy to have served the Nation for 40 years.

36.       2nd Life.          Post retirement had to refocus, which
frankly did take a lot of my effort to re-adjust with the new way of life. Now,
the focus was to look after the most neglected part ie My Land and my Home. It
was Time to give back. I am now managing, two large orchards of Mango and one
of Guava. Was also instrumental in re-organising and streamlining the
Management Committee of our famous local temple

namely NAGNI MATA TEMPLE. Also, carried
out some development activities with future in focus and I must acknowledge
that it has come up to a reasonably good standard and is self-sustaining.  It today is a recognized and registered Trust
with its own assets to look after the devotees. It has its own office,
building, Toilets and drainage all this with a proper accounting and yearly
audited system.

37.       Currently, am literally doing nothing. Just looking after and
maintaining myself and the orchards.

38.     My elder son, Brig Ajay Katoch, YSM, SM has a daughter who after completion of her IT from AIT Pune is now gainfully employed and his son is in 11th Standard.

WITH BRIG AJAY KATOCH,YSM,SM HIS WIFE & SON

39.     My younger son, Col Vikas Katoch has two sons. Elder one would be pursuing higher studies from this year onwards while the younger one is in the 3rd standard.

WITH HE DALAI LAMA & COL VIKAS KATOCH WITH FAMILY

40. Youngest son , Ikshit Katoch after his MBA is employed with a US Based Finance Company at Pune (currently Work from Home). He is finance Associate Level-II. Looking for a suitable match.
