Tagra Raho Sir,
I am attaching the write up and also pasting the text.
Its a bit long. Please include only the portion which you think relevant. I have written for your consumtion also hence included some details which may not be relevent for the page you are updating [ NO EDITING DONE, RAMANAN ]

COL HG SINGH
Early days
1. Commissioned to 6 Assam Regt on 01 Sep 1979 SS 28 from OTS (now OTA) Ranked 60 among cadets of 365. I was best boxer of my weight, and champion in Obstacle course competition and Runners up in best physical fitness.
2. Being completely from a civil background did not have any idea of what would be Army career after joining army I was looking for some guidance from my would be seniors. I came to know about Col AB Sharma being in 6 Assam I wrote Inf & 6 Assam in the option column whereas normally cadets write only the Regt and Arms/Service of choice. May be I was in top of my block I got my choice 6 Assam.
3. Immediately after commissioning I reported to ARC Happy Valley along with other three 2Lts CS Unni of 2 Assam, V Diwaker of 4 Assam and PS Bains of 7 Assam. After initial attachment I along with PS Bains were retained as we were selected to participate in ARA shooting competition in MHOW to be held in Dec 1979/Jan 1980 along with other Rhino Boys in the team representing Assam Regt.
4. We practiced in long range starting just after PT camping in long range breakfast lunch there only firing more than 1000 rounds every day and broke all previous ARA records in all our respective matches
5. However we missed out on two amendments in the rule of competition which we did not implement during our practice. We used to get of the firing trence once we finished firing and get ready to rush to the next firing point on whistle by the judge at the firing point. In actual competition we were not allowed to get out before the whistle blew. That made difference in timing. Secondly we practiced timed firing with pre filled magazines whereas in actual competition filling of magazine was included in the timed fire. However luckily we had been practicing filling of magazine and competing among ourselves during range firing and that compensated the disadvantage to some extent. And despite the above mentioned flaw in practice we could manage to win prizes.
First Rhino to have won ARA Medal.
6. I won second prize and PS Bains won the third prize in YOs match. I along with PS Bains became the first Rhino to have won Coveted medals of ARA competition in Assam regt. However our Rhino boys committed blunder of firing in other’s target and also made other silly mistakes and did not get any prize.
Transfer to Madras Regt.
7. My service in Assam Regt has been short as I was earmarked to be posted to 10 Madras on raising in Feb 1985 as Mixed (Fixed Tp) Bn as ordered by then COAS Gen Sunderji as fall out of problems post OP Bluestar. However I have always remained a Rhino more so due to the fact that I also hail from the same region as all the rhino tps. I kept in touch with the Bn and visited whenever I had an opportunity specially Raising Day functions. Then Maj RS Williams ex 1 Assam also joined me along with other Rhinos fom all Assam Regt Bns
Career Details.
8. During my early days of service I had been the Adm Comdt of 70 Bde in Ladakh and 41 Bde in Lucknow where I worked with Tps of Mahar Regt and Rajput Regt. Mostly I served in Fd and HAA areas. Four tenures in J&K and once in Arunachal Pradesh
9. In 1987 I was posted as Tech Offr Grade III in DRDO org SASE (Snow & Avalanche Study Est) and stayed in OP Meghdoot at Siachen Glacier for almost 18 months. I had opportunity to work along with the scientists. There I experienced unpleasant situation of our service jawans on ERE being exploited even abused by the civilian scientists using them as Olrderly. I fought for them and refused to detail sahayak for civil scientist during my tenure as Det Cdr in Siachen and the Civ Scientist vis us. I was hauled up by the Dy Dir who was a Col of Engr Regt permanently seconded to DRDO.
10. In 1996 I was posted as OC FS Sec HQ Bengal Area and continued in the same appt in 10 Corps and 16 Corps and worked with JCO Ors of Int Corp.
11. Thereafter I was posted as Comp Comdt of 44 Inf Bde and thereafter Adm Comdt at Leimakhong Mil Stn.
12. During my service I participated in Ops Blue star, OP Meghdoot, OP Trident, OP Rhino served in CI ops in J&K and Manipur
Post Retirement.
13. After Retirement I had a short sting with C&C Constr Co undertaking construction of Road from Shimla to Rhoru. Thereafter I was offered a job of Cheif Admin Offr of ICFAI University Tripura at Agartala. Thereafter I worked as OC ECHS Polyclinic at Agartala for 3 and half year before finally settling down at my hometown Imphal.
14. Presently I am running “Home stay” by registering my house in “Booking.com” a Hospitality company of Netherland. I am receiving guests from Japan, Canada, Italy, UK and other countries till it was stopped due to Corona pandemic. Eagerly waiting to re start again after the pandemic.
Greatest Moment in my life.
15. I had brought up my daughter in a very free and unbiased manner and ensuring all correct values are learned by her without using any violence. She took me as her idol and never cried “Mommy” but “Papa” whenever she was in pain or distress. Finally when she participated beauty contest in May Queen contest she was asked “Who is the person whom you think your ideal in life” She said withour any hesitation “My Papa” That was the most satisfying moment in my life.
Some touching incidents.
16. Change of Regt. I reported to MRC Wellington in Feb 85 for raising of 10 Madras and I was guiding all the new Rhinos joining the Thambi Regt. Whic was comprising troops from of Jat, Bihar and Madras Regt. Our Rhinos found it difficult to adjust initially. On Hav walked up to me and said “Tagra Raho Saheb Hum wapas jana hai apana Regt” on my enquiring the reason he said “Jat wale baat karna bhi nahi aata humko bahuth rough bat karta hai Tu Tu karke bulata hai.” I had difficult time to pacify them telling them about the non existence of the word aap and tum in Haryanvi language.
17. Papa Pande visited. During the stay in MRC Papa Pandey came all the way to meet the Rhino Boys and look up our welfare and intereacted with us. He had retired long time before the raising of the mixed Bn but he was so devoted to the Regt and all the Rhinos felt really proud.
18. Reaction of then serving COR. Before the raising process was to be completed I had to go on JC course at College of Combat MHOW in Oct 1985. Gen Ranbir Singh was the Comdt Inf School co located in MHOW. Demo Coy was from 6 Assam & then Maj Banerjee whoe was my ex Coy Cdr was the demo Coy Cdr. He invited me in the Dussera function and Gen Ranbir also came to attend the function. All officers and JCOs were lined up to be introduced to the COR. He shook hands with all and I was introduced to him “He is Capt HG from my Bn but just transferred to 10 Madras” He just said “Oh” and just moved on. I felt very bad as I was expecting him to ask how our Rhino boys were doing in the new set up, are they having any problem in adjustment etc. In complete contrast with the feelings of Papa Pandey he showed complete lack of feelings towards the Rhino team. Again he invited all Assam Regt offrs posted there and those undergoing courses for Regtl tea party but left me out.
Close encounter with one of the most dedicated soldier and patriot.
19. I had lovely association with Brig Ramanan while 10 Madras was in Tenga Valley when he came as Cdr 11 Bde. He used to go in grassroots while inspecting the Bn paying special attention to YOs and Jr ldrs Pl & Sec Cdr. He displayed extreme sense of patriotism in one incident when he was handed over Wingsung fountain pen which at that time was considered most reliable for signing the visitor’s book. Brig Ramanan just lifted and saw the work Made in China and he just threw away the pen through the window and cursing “How can you patronise enemy country?”
20. Hard task master he was in that he put all the YOs on their toes by insisting that all officers to maintain diary recording daily activities on half an hour basis which was a really painful affair for all of us. Book review and other items were also included in leadership trg for the YOs and Jr ldrs.
21. Our own CO was Non Psc but aspiring to pick up the next Rk was initially in a very good terms with the Cdr however the Cdr Saw through his dishonesty in performance became in loggerheads with the CO. Subsequently the CO tried to avoid takin CR from Brig Ramanan and took all possible leaves and after exhausting leaves he got himself by lgetting admitted in Base Hosp in Guwahati by feigning knee problem unable to walk. I came to know about the pretending of knee pain when I visited him in Base Hosp. I was approaching the Offrs ward and from outside the boundary wall I could see him walkin absolutel normal without any sign of knee problem and he didn’t see me. But when I reached the Gate and he saw me coming towards him he immediately started limpin with grimace. I had a hearty laugh in my mind. Finally he retired as Col only.
22. My encounter with Brig Ramanan. I was to go on routine LRP in Chinese border which required going to two points in the border. Initially this Ptl was designed to be performend by two offrs. Ptl was to go together until the Ptl Base is reached and thereafter the two offrs were supposed to take two different Ptls to the two pints in the Border. However the Cdr modified and only I was detailed for the Ptl and mad to touch bothe the points by one ptl only. Radio silence was to be maintained and only code sounds were to be transmitted to report on arr and dep of bounds, ptl base and final RV. I completed both the ptlg and came bace to ptl base fully exhausted. Freq dead zone used to exist enrout and code sig were not reached Bde HQ sometimes. I therefore could send report sig almost 30 min after I actually reached the final RV I was supposed to stay 45 min at the border and come back after observing any activity. However due to delay in getting report of arr the Bde HQ thought I had stayed only 15 min at final RV. I got frantic call from Brig Ramanan and he was annoyed and asked me to repeat the ptl again as there was lack of comn I could not convey the actual sit to convince the Cdr. I again repeated once more. When I came back I lost 15kg of body wt.
